Melton Young People’s Group
Melton Young Person’s group was founded in September 2015, for people aged 14 – 19 who live in or around Melton and who have a keen interest in heritage and history.
With Melton being the home of The Defence Animal Centre, this new group focuses on the role of animals in Melton during WW1.
Since 1903 the Army has had a presence in Melton Mowbray and the town is now home to the main animal training centre for the Armed Forces. This group are the first to explore the contents of an Army Veterinary Corps WW1 box including records, diaries, photographs, and reports. This group have been archiving, documenting and digitising their findings.
The DAC are now involved with the project and are supporting the young people to maximise their research. On 3rd December our Melton Young people were lucky enough to have a visit from Major Steve Leavis, Corporal Wayne Gell and Military Working Dog Jess, from the Defence Animal Centre and were able to demonstrate the way the army train and work with military animals in the modern day.
