Latimer School Project
Century of Stories began an exciting project with 60 year 5 and 6 pupils from Latimer School in Anstey, as a spin of from a project with the village’s community library at the beginning of 2017.

A project with Latimer School was launched 18th May, with a re-enactor engaging the pupils and putting WW1 in historical context and bringing history to life for the pupils. Following this launch a 6 week project was agreed upon, to research the history of Anstey in WW1 and the pupil’s personal and familial connections.
On the first week the children visited Anstey Community Library and took part in a session run by volunteers to learn how to research their family history back to WW1. This was facilitated by using the memorial research that had been done by Loughborough Local Studies Team. Each pupil was allocated a name to research, some of which were known family members.
During the following session pupils took part in a history walk around Anstey to learn about how the buildings and people have changed over time.
There was also a session at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rurtland during the 6 week project where the Record Office arranged some amazing activities to engage students through the day, these included:
– Trench experience including mortar attack and stretcher bearers
– Fully costumed WW1 Reenactor
– WW1 research & ‘grenade’ throwing!
– Advance across no mans land, with a ‘rum’ ration (blackcurrent squash!) and biscuit to give them courage to go over the top
Over the 6 weeks, the children also took part in homework assignments where they spoke to parents, grandparents and extended family members, to write their family trees and trace their ancestors back to WW1, one young man even found out his ancestor was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, and at the time of his death was England’s leading flying ace!
To celebrate the end of the project, the children proudly shared all of their hard work with the school, parents and family members, at a sharing day on 29th June 2017. The children have also shared their family trees and research on pinterest here www.pinterest.co.uk/century_stories/latimer-primary-school-pupils-research-their-famil/
